STRUCTURE OF THE STUDY

In the Fall we will meet once per week (on a day and time as determined by the group) for 2 1/2 hours for 15 weeks for the first half of the Gospel, then will complete the second half of the Gospel utilizing the same format in the Winter/Spring.

About the Study

WHY MARK?

  1. Shortest of the Gospels - as it is, it will take us about 80 hours to get through the whole Gospel!
  2. First Gospel - generally agreed that the Gospel of Mark came before Matthew, Luke or John
  3. Cliff Notes - there's about 99% overlap with the other Gospels!

Key Assumptions

Key to our study is the belief that the Bible was inspired by God. We are therefore able to hinge a lot on the words used by the author; they were not randomly chosen and God was not absent during the translation process!

GOALS OF THE STUDY

  1. To see more clearly who Jesus is

Whether you've got your PhD in New Testament studies or have never even opened the Bible, you will see Jesus more clearly than before!

  2. To read the Bible like a love letter

Think back to the last time you read a Love Letter. How did you read it? Casually? Disinterested? I don't think so!  You poured over every sentence and word! And you asked questions like, "What did she/he mean by that?"

In the same way, this Study will teach you ways to read the Bible like a Love Letter. You will also hopefully feel what the Psalmist felt when he wrote, "My soul is crushed with longing after your ordinances (Your Word) at all times" (Psalm 119:20 NASB)!
